atithi devo bhav

In my culture, guests are considered equivalent to God. If you are a guest, you are not allowed to clean, contribute, or even comment. We will welcome you, cook delicious food, chalk your itinerary, and give you gifts as well. It’s your moral duty to just relax and be taken care of. This is what had allowed the sages, the enlightened ones, and Buddha himself to survive. They practiced their beliefs, contributed to the scriptures, and meditated under a tree while someone else bought groceries and cooked in the kitchen; no pun intended!

My next set of guests are on the move. Here’s what I’m looking forward to:

• Trips to Fillmore to bring back a carton each of oranges and grapefruit,
• Healthy delicious food every single day,
• Adding to my succulents collection,
• Dinner parties & overflowing red wine,
• Spontaneous weekend getaways,
• Trips to the Malibu farmer’s market,
• Joint motivation for entering the gym,
• A mini vacation to someplace unvisited,
• Regular multivitamins, calcium, fish oil, and flossing,
• Lots of heated discussions and arguments,

and last but the very best,

• Someone to come home to.

war

Homo sapiens have been around for 200,000 years and I, only 30. My knowledge is limited and my brain can’t be stretched. And so, I need help. I need help in understanding how a human being can be so callous in taking lives of the members of his own species.

I have read the Bhagavada Gita and to this day, I am unable to accept Krishna’s answer to the question posed by Arjuna. The conversation is globally appreciated but I still can’t grasp Krishna’s definitions of dharma and karma yoga. I pity the wounded and the dead for they were neither related to the Pandavas nor the Kauravas.

How are we able to raise a sword and chop off limbs just because the victim believes in another form of God? What amounts to that level of hatred towards a stranger? What difference does it make if one bows down at a temple instead of a mosque? Should we expect a world war III between the vegetarians and the meat-eaters?

What superiority is it if you have to gain it by removing the inferiors? After all, there is day only because there is night. You need the weak to be strong. If you kill the weak, you’ll end up killing the originally strong ones until you have only 1 left. With just 1 left, what’s even the point?

Fearing the spread of communism and hiding under the ‘domino effect’, how does a country kill so many and still call it ‘help?’

You self-invite yourself to another’s nation and punish them for demanding independence? You beat them up at any sign of resistance. You order open firing for anyone who stands up the courage to raise a voice, a voice towards their own freedom.

Slavery, mutilating the unarmed and the harmless, burning humans alive, crushing little brains – this is beyond my comprehension. Colonies, oil, currency – when will humans be satisfied?

My knowledge is limited and my brain can’t be stretched. And so, I need help. I need help in understanding how a human being can be so callous in taking lives of the members of their own species.
